In 2006 he joined the Dimitar Rohov Sports School in the town of Sliven. In 2007 he won the Olympic Hopefuls competition in Romania. Since then, he has not lost any match at a state championship and is an absolute republican champion for all ages. In 2009 his great success in judo and sambo began. Still a student in the 12th grade, he was chosen as Sportsman No. 1 of Sliven Municipality and of the Sports School. That same year he won two gold, two silver and two bronze medals from various international tournaments and won the Junior Balkan Judo Championship.

He reached 4th place in the European Judo Rankings. In 2009 Daniel Dichev won the Junior World Sambo Championship.  In 2010 he won the Junior European Cup in St. Petersburg, the Junior European Cup up to 20 years in Greece, as well as in Hungary and Ukraine. He finished 3rd at the European Judo Championship.  In 2012 he won his first men’s tournament at the European Cup in Istanbul, and in sambo he won the silver medal at the European Championship in Milan. At the men’s World Championship that year in St. Petersburg he finished 3rd. In 2013 he was ranked 2nd at the European Judo Cup in Sweden. In 2014 he finished 3rd at the European Judo Cup in Sofia.

He went to a sports camp in Japan in 2009 for the first time. In the summer of 2013 he received an invitation from the governing body of the Japanese Judo Federation and the Nihon University to train and prepare for competitions in Tokyo.
In the summer of 2014 he took part in the preparatory camp of Kodokan Judo, where he confirmed the positive opinion of the Japanese parties with his good performance. Without much hesitation, Daniel Dichev accepted the challenge, especially as he remained a Bulgarian national competitor. In the autumn of 2014 he started his preparation and started to study Japanese. In November of the same year he attended the entrance exams at the Nihon University.

At present he is a student at the Department of Physical Education and Sports and has trained and competed at the University’s Judo Club – the Red Elephants, since April 2015. Daniel Dichev is not only the only Bulgarian, but the only European there. Displaying his skills and an understanding of Japanese sport and spirit, he is an indispensable competitor and a regular starter in the team. Honors were soon to follows and in May 2017 he ranked 3rd in Tokyo at the regional university competition.  In June 2017 Daniel demonstrated his peak performance and was awarded the “Best Judoist” in Japan, an award that only two foreigners have won so far in the history of Judo!

Devoting himself entirely to judo and the Japanese spirit, Daniel Dichev confidently marches to his dream destination – the Olympic title.  In 2018 he will participate in both the World Judo Championships and many other competitions.

Daniel Dichev is also entering the pre-Olympic cycle in order to prepare for his participation in the 2020 Summer Olympics, which will take place in Japan.
